Generally, telematic connections are considered to be symmetric settings in which two or more spaces are connected via the internet. In reality, however, asymmetry is the main factor determining communication between distant locations. ‘Osmosis’ addresses the asymmetric constellations of connected spaces and their impact on performances. Diffusion and absorption are just two of the fundamental processes involved in osmotic reactions between the cells of an organism in nature. In the performance ‘Osmosis’, the virtual space between locations is conceived as a semipermeable membrane that selectively transmits parameters from one space to another, allowing elements such as size, speed of gesture, and other aspects to change during transition.
Osmosis also refers to the continuous suggestion and effortless, often unconscious assimilation of performative ideas over the internet. A special feature of the project is its live streaming and online documentation. As the entire performance will take place locally between two rooms at Zurich University of the Arts, a new format will be developed exclusively for the live stream. Between the two performances of 20 minutes each, the audience will switch rooms to gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire setting.
