19–22 April 2018 · Stony Brook University, New York
At the NOWNET Arts Conference 2018, the Telematic Performance Format research group presented artistic and technological strategies for networked performance across public and private networks. On 21 April, the session “Reflections on collaborative telematic music performance and research” connected Stony Brook University with the Zurich University of the Arts.
Matthias Ziegler, Johannes Schütt, Patrick Müller and Martin Fröhlich presented the research remotely from Zurich. Benjamin Burger and Joel De Giovanni were on site in New York, where they implemented the connection and the spatial video setup.

The presentation examined how local and remote performers can share a coherent stage. The team discussed viewing directions, spatial perspective, moving screens, automated tracking and image rectification. A multichannel audio and video connection based on JackTrip and UltraGrid demonstrated how high-quality telematic performance could be made accessible beyond specialised technical institutions.

The session also included a telematic concert with Mark Dresser on double bass and Michael Dessen on trombone at Stony Brook University, joined remotely by Matthias Ziegler on flutes from Zurich.
